I have always loved food! I love eating it and I love everything about it. I love wandering through local farmers’s markets, exploring neighborhood grocery stores, talking with growers, and discovering what each region of the world has to offer. My family laughs because whenever we travel, they know I will spend hours browsing food markets instead of shopping for clothes or souvenirs.

Food has fascinated me for so long that I can’t remember a time when that fascination began. I know that my relationship with food began long before I opened my first nutrition book. No doubt because my family had a farm with fruit trees, gardens and animals, where much of what appeared on our table came directly from the nearby land. Since then, I have spent decades studying nutrition and wellness. Looking back, I realize those early experiences shaped not only the way I eat, but also the way I understand life itself.

Today’s Reality

Imagine walking through an apple orchard on a warm afternoon. You reach up, pick a ripe apple directly from the tree, and take your first bite. Of course, you receive vitamins, fiber, antioxidants, and natural sugars, but you also receive something far more difficult to measure. You receive “Living Light”;  also known as Life force energy. That life force energy is the vitality of a fruit that is still deeply connected to the sunlight, soil, rain, and seasons that nourished it. It is the energy in freshly harvested food that most of us recognize instinctively, even if we cannot fully explain it.

Now imagine that very same apple following a different path. It is harvested commercially, placed into large bins, transported by truck, moved through distribution centers, shipped hundreds or even thousands of miles, stored in warehouses, displayed under bright supermarket lights, and finally purchased days, or sometimes weeks later.

On that tortuous path, the apple’s nutrients may still remain intact, but its vitality - the Living Light within it has diminished. The same for all our natural products. As food spends days or weeks traveling from farm to warehouse, through distribution centers and onto supermarket shelves, it gradually loses the vibrant Living Light that once flowed through it directly from the sun.

We measure the energy in food by calories. We measure distance by miles and weight by ounces. Light, too, has its own language - it expresses itself through photon energy. A photon is the smallest unit or particle of light, carrying the energy of the sun across space until it reaches the Earth. To me, this photon energy is far more than a scientific concept. It is the Living Light carried within fresh food – the light captured from the sun and woven into every leaf, fruit, vegetable, and seed through the remarkable process of photosynthesis.

Across cultures and history, people have given this living energy many names: life force, prana, qi, vital energy, living light or Bio-Life. Whatever name you choose, I believe you recognize its presence without needing scientific proof.

Today, most conversations about food revolve around nutritional labels and dietary philosophies. We debate whether we should eat keto, gluten-free, organic, low carbohydrate, or high protein. While each of these approaches has its place, I rarely hear another question being asked:

How much living life is actually in your protein bar or your favorite supplements?

This may be one of the most important nutritional questions of all. From my own experience, food that is abundant with this Living Light is profoundly nourishing. Its flavors are richer, its aroma more vibrant, and I find that I become satisfied much sooner, and I feel nourished.

A tomato picked from the vine moments before dinner carries a freshness, a vitality and Living Light that are unmistakable. In contrast, food that has lost much of its Living Light may fill the stomach, yet it rarely provides the same sense of vitality and well-being.

To me, this Living Light is one of nature’s greatest gifts, reminding us that food is not merely fuel, but a living bridge between the Sun, the Earth, and ourselves.

The Science Behind the Living Light

For many years I openly shared my belief that food carries a Living Light beyond its measurable nutrients. It was deeply validating to discover the documentary "Farmacy of Light", which explores many of these same ideas. The film invites us to consider that food is much more than calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber. It suggests that fresh, living plants also carry the sunlight captured through photosynthesis, the energy that ultimately supports nearly every living organism on Earth. Every leaf, fruit, and vegetable begins as sunlight transforms into living tissue, reminding us that our relationship with food is inseparable from our relationship with light.

This idea may be poetic, yet researchers have studied ultra-weak light emissions from living organisms, known as biophotons, using highly sensitive scientific instruments. While scientists continue exploring the biological significance of these emissions, I find the research inspiring because it reminds us that life is dynamic.

Living organisms are not simply collections of chemical reactions - they are constantly exchanging energy with the world around them.

As humans, we are electromagnetic beings. Every heartbeat, every nerve impulse, and every cell communicates through tiny electrical signals. As biophysicist and pioneer of biophoton research Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp observed,

"We know today that man, essentially, is a being of light. And the modern science of photobiology is presently proving this. In terms of healing, the implications are immense."

Calories undoubtedly provide fuel, but I believe nourishment includes another essential dimension—the living relationship between sunlight, plants, the Earth, and ourselves. We are not designed merely to survive. We are designed to thrive, and thriving depends on remaining connected with the living systems that sustain and illuminate life.

These thoughts have stayed with me ever since moving to America more than thirty years ago. Growing up in Eastern Europe, fresh food was never considered a luxury or a wellness trend. It was simply how life worked. We did not have endless aisles of convenience foods or produce shipped from every corner of the world. Instead, our streets were lined with plum trees, apple trees, Our parks have walnut trees, and hazelnut trees. Families grew vegetables in their gardens, neighbors and friends exchanged harvests, children were free to climb a tree and pick apples or plums. Food was seasonal, local, and simply part of everyday life.

Today as I walk through supermarkets overflowing with beautiful produce. The apples shine, the tomatoes are perfectly shaped, and everything appears abundant. Yet much of this food has traveled extraordinary distances before reaching our kitchens.

I often find myself wondering why we have become so disconnected from growing even a small portion of what we eat.

Why don’t more neighborhoods and suburbs plant edible landscapes filled with fruit and nut trees?

Why have we forgotten the simple joy of eating with the seasons or knowing the farmers who grow our food?

It leads me to think that in many ways, we are overfed yet undernourished. And the solution lies not only in what we eat, but in how closely our food remains connected to the living systems from which it came.

There is Wonderful News!!

Reconnecting with Living Light does not require acres of farmland. If you have a backyard, plant a fruit tree, a blackberry bush, or a small vegetable garden. If you have a balcony, grow herbs. If all you have is a sunny windowsill, place a pot of basil, parsley, mint, or even a cherry tomato plant there.

Every fresh leaf is sunlight transformed into life. To me, that is the true meaning of Bio-Life - Living Light. The more food filled with Living Light we welcome into our lives, the more vitality we cultivate—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

As we nourish ourselves with this Living Light, we begin to feel lighter, more vibrant, and more deeply nourished. In turn, we naturally become people who bring more light into the lives of others.

If this subject speaks to you, I recommend watching the fascinating documentary "Farmacy of Light". It offers us an invitation to rethink our relationship with food, light, and health. Perhaps the missing ingredient has never been another supplement or another diet. Perhaps it has always been the Living Light.

With Peace and Love,

Dr. Lenka
